Kumquat Art & Home opened its’ doors on November 1st, 1997 with the idea of selling “happy, friendly art from new and local artists” in an unassuming environment. Everything in the store is handmade in America with a few products from Europe. Handmade in California is the first choice. The painters are always from the Bay Area.
Owner Keverne Tuomey says that "little businesses are what drive this nation. Now more than ever, it is important to support small businesses." Freelance, her Black Lab Mix, was her business partner but unfortunately passed away from old age. “Freelance was an integral part of the store. She was here since Day 1. She sold, she guarded, she demanded belly rubs and she just knew how to sit in the doorway and look cute, elegant and friendly – she was perfect for the gallery.” We have since adopted Reno from Golden Gate Lab Rescue, a wonderful Black Lab who was desperate for a loving home. He already has a huge fan club! Please come and meet him. Freelance must have given him shop dog lessons - he meets and greets and waits for the pets and belly rubs!
About our merchandise: We believe in California-made if possible - supports the local community, it's more green, gives us jobs! That's why more than 50% of our products are made here, the rest are made in America, with a litte bit coming from Europe (who does Christmas best after all?!) A new venture for Kumquat Art is our "own line" - we just say "Kumquat Exclusives". We have tried to find American-made throw pillows, runners and napkins made of quality cottons at an affordable price that are nice, and have been unsuccessful. So guess what? We buy our own fabric and work with a seamstress in the Sierras and we are having some fun! Go see our new collection under the "Kumquat Exclusives" section and you will see what we are talking about!
